BSA: CA Senate Must Reject 1018 Following Approps Vote
BSA Senior Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright reacts to the California Senate Appropriations Committee's vote to advance AB 1018 without amendment:
"BSA calls upon the California Senate to oppose AB 1018, sweeping legislation that would subject many industries and routine artificial intelligence (AI) tools into a complex and unworkable regulatory regime.
AB 1018 risks stalling innovation and standing as a barrier to widespread and responsible adoption of AI by businesses in every industry. This legislation would cost California government agencies hundreds of millions of dollars. It also creates more confusion than clarity, a concern shared by California state agencies that have warned lawmakers that this legislation is 'vague, ambiguous, and could encompass many current tools used, like excel workbooks.'
California can't afford to get AI regulation wrong. AB 1018 fails that test. BSA will continue to engage with members of the California Senate to urge them to oppose AB 1018."
