BSA Calls Digital Trade in NAFTA a Golden Opportunity

WASHINGTON – July 17, 2017 – BSA | The Software Alliance applauds the digital trade components in the US Trade Representative’s (USTR) negotiation objectives for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), released today. Digital trade is critical to the US and the global economies. NAFTA is a golden opportunity to fill a glaring gap in North American trade relations. The objectives are a good step toward modernizing trade rules in a way that benefits all three countries’ economies and sets an example for the world. We are pleased that USTR recognizes the importance of digital trade, in particular, ensuring cross-border data flows, preventing data localization requirements, and protecting source code. BSA looks forward to working with USTR to formalize these objectives into a modernized NAFTA.
