BSA Opposes AB 1018 Over Broad Scope

WASHINGTON – Business Software Alliance (BSA) Senior Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright issued the following statement regarding AB 1018, proposed legislation regulating high-risk AI, in California:

"Recent amendments to AB 1018 fall short of addressing problematic aspects of the bill, subjecting many everyday uses of AI into a new regulatory regime. The legislation’s broad scope would subject basic practices like statistical analysis and data modeling used in assisting human decision-making to broad disclosures and consumer requests. At a late stage in the legislative debate, the new changes to AB 1018 still set California on the path toward fragmentation on AI policy, piling onto a troubled approach taken in Colorado. BSA joins many other partners in the business community in opposing AB 1018."
