BSA Statement on Governor Youngkin's Veto of HB 2094
WASHINGTON – Business Software Alliance Senior Director of State Advocacy Heather Curry made the following statement following Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s decision to veto HB 2094, legislation that would have regulated artificial intelligence (AI) in the state:
“The Business Software Alliance appreciates the careful consideration Gov. Youngkin devoted toward determining his position on HB 2094, and the strides made by the Virginia legislature to incorporate stakeholder input in crafting its approach to artificial intelligence policy.
Gov. Youngkin’s decision to veto HB 2094 reflects a growing sense among elected leaders – from both parties – that policymakers at the state and federal level should exercise caution in implementing AI regulation. HB 2094 focused on the right set of issues, by identifying new guardrails for high-risk AI systems. Elected leaders can draw important insights from Virginia’s work on this bill to ensure the US remains a leader in AI innovation and adoption.
BSA will continue to work with state, national, and international policy leaders on guardrails for AI that create clarity and consistency, and promote the adoption of responsible AI across the economy.”
BSA previously outlined its specific feedback regarding Virginia HB 2094 in a letter to state lawmakers in February.
