BSA Statement on Proposed 'Pause' on State AI Laws

WASHINGTON – Business Software Alliance Senior Vice President of US Government Relations Craig Albright issued the following statement regarding proposed legislation to pause states' AI laws for up to 10 years as a condition of broadband development funding:

“The proposed 10-year pause on states’ AI legislation seeks to address a worst-case scenario in which states enact conflicting and unworkable laws that hamper innovation and become a meaningful compliance burden — both for companies that develop AI, as well as those who adopt and use AI products and services.

National AI competitiveness depends not just on developing cutting-edge technology, but on widespread adoption across the economy. The economies that successfully adopt and use AI are the ones best poised to succeed in AI competitiveness.

BSA supports clear and consistent national standards that bolster AI security, build public trust in AI, and give businesses the confidence to adopt AI solutions.”
