US: BSA Letter to California’s Senate Appropriations Committee Regarding AB 1405

BSA appreciates the opportunity to share insights from the enterprise software sector on AB 1405, which we oppose. While we support the goal of ensuring accountability in AI, we have concerns about the AI audit regime AB 1405 would establish. We oppose the legislation, because:

  1. The current AI auditing ecosystem is immature;
  2. This bill, combined with AB 1018, short-circuits the process of creating globally recognized standards for AI; and
  3. Well-established accountability tools, like impact assessments, are better suited to encourage the responsible development and use of AI.
