The tech trade association took a look at state privacy laws, with eight set to take effect next year. Twenty states have passed laws to date, with more legislative proposals expected next year. 

At this point “nearly all of the states have agreed on the same structural model for protecting privacy, but they have adjusted that model to provide different levels of protections, right? So that's why you see the differences in the states that offer stronger protections and then the ones that offer the narrower protections,” said Olga Medina, director of policy at BSA. 

It’s been a beneficial trend for tech companies that have cautioned a patchwork of privacy laws could hinder nationwide businesses, Medina told MLex.
