Virtual Event: Charting A New Path In the World – The United Kingdom’s Data Protection Reforms

July 12, 2022

Speaker: Aaron Cooper, Vice President, Global Policy, BSA | The Software Alliance

When the United Kingdom left the European Union, it incorporated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) into UK domestic law to enable uninterrupted data transfers from EU territory. On June 17, the UK government announced the results of an exhaustive public consultation on how it intends to “seize the benefits of Brexit,” diverge from the EU GDPR, and chart a more independent course in the world of data policy.

Could the planned changes promote greater interoperability among countries around the world? Are the UK reforms instructive for efforts elsewhere to amend or consider new privacy legislation? Could they affect the European Commission’s 2021 decision that the UK’s data protection laws are equivalent to those in the European Union? The Atlantic Council’s Europe Center hosts a panel discussion gauging reactions from transatlantic data policy experts.

Speakers include:

  • Aaron Cooper, Vice President, Global Policy at BSA | The Software Alliance;
  • Jenny Hall, Director of Data Policy, Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport of the United Kingdom;
  • Cameron Kerry, Ann R. & Andrew H. Tisch Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution; and
  • Gabriela Zanfir-Fortuna, Vice President for Global Privacy at the Future of Privacy Forum

Kenneth Propp, Nonresident Senior Fellow at The Atlantic Council’s Europe Center will moderate.
