BSA Commends Congressional Letter Urging Sustainable Mechanism for EU-US Data Transfers

WASHINGTON – August 5, 2020 – BSA | The Software Alliance applauds Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) as well as Representatives Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Greg Walden (R-OR) for their bicameral, bipartisan letter to the US Department of Commerce and the Federal Trade Commission urging them to work with their European counterparts to ensure consumer and business services are not disrupted as a result of the European Court of Justice’s recent decision invalidating the EU-US Privacy Shield.

“Businesses in every industry rely on the ability to send data across international borders. The invalidation of the Privacy Shield has serious consequences for businesses of all sizes and in all sectors, including the many small and medium-sized businesses that transferred data pursuant to the Privacy Shield program,” said Kate Goodloe, Director, Policy at BSA | The Software Alliance. “We appreciate the leadership of Senators Wicker and Cantwell and Representatives Pallone and Walden – and their recognition that the ability to transfer data across borders is critical to businesses and the consumers they serve. We strongly support the Department of Commerce’s efforts to work with their EU counterparts to negotiate a new agreement that creates a stable and sustainable mechanism for companies to transfer data between the European Union and the United States.”
