BSA Report: Achieving Sustainability Requires Digital Transformation

WASHINGTON – BSA | The Software Alliance on Tuesday released its “Global Sustainability Principles” document outlining how the enterprise software industry is working on sustainability and helping individuals, communities, and organizations to do the same.

BSA President and CEO Victoria Espinel issued the following statement regarding the report and its principles:

Addressing climate change requires harnessing the tools of digital transformation created by the enterprise software industry. BSA's new sustainability principles document shows how both BSA members and their employees are advancing a more environmentally responsible future and supporting the increased sustainability of governments, businesses, and communities

Software plays an essential role in enabling individuals and organizations to set ambitious climate targets, track progress, and ultimately set even bolder goals. BSA's policy and advocacy intends to further the digital transformation necessary to ensure transparent, accountable, and accurate climate-related targets.

The document outlines three core objectives that capture how the enterprise software industry is driving sustainability:

  1. Set ambitious, transparent, and accountable climate targets
  2.  Advocate for policies to create a more resilient and inclusive society
  3. Harness the power of digital transformation to improve sustainability

The document outlines a number of examples of how BSA members are helping to drive forward those objectives.

BSA, through its cross-sector initiative, the Digital Transformation Network (DTN), has additionally published content on Digital Tools for a Sustainable Future, which captures how digital technologies have the potential to reduce overall electricity demand by 25 percent by 2050, and slash GHG emissions by 19 percent.
