BSA | The Software Alliance Statement on ECPA Markup
“We welcome the news of the deal to advance ECPA reform legislation, and we urge members of the Judiciary Committee to give the manager’s amendment their full support,” says BSA President and CEO Victoria Espinel. “By requiring a warrant for law enforcement to gain access to users’ private data in the cloud, this legislation ensures that BSA member companies can continue to be strong stewards of their customers’ data. Its eventual passage will only serve to underscore the strength of privacy protections under US law.
“This agreement reflects several years of work, and we commend Chairman Goodlatte and his staff for working with a broad coalition representing industry and civil society groups of all stripes to reach a deal. We look forward to Wednesday’s markup, and we urge that the House take up and pass ECPA reform as quickly as possible. This legislation has languished for too long, and no reason exists for further delay.”
