US: BSA Letter to California’s Senate Appropriations Committee Regarding AB 1018

BSA opposes AB 1018 and recommends that any AI legislation instead focus narrowly on high-risk AI uses, define key terms clearly, and require developers and deployers to conduct risk management programs and impact assessments instead of third-party audits. BSA urges clarifying the respective responsibilities of developers and deployers to reflect their roles in the AI value chain and recommends exclusive enforcement authority for the Attorney General to ensure consistent application of the law. Finally, BSA calls for promoting interoperability with global frameworks and integrating ongoing stakeholder input into the legislative process.
