Global Tech Groups Raise Concern Over Draft Chinese Data Security Law
Inside US Trade, December 1, 2021
By Brett Fortnam
Technology groups from around the world are cautioning the Chinese government that proposed data transfer security measures could undermine the critical role those transfers play in the global value chain.
More than 25 business groups on Wednesday sent a letter to the data governance division of China's Cyberspace Administration raising concern over provisions in the draft "Data Transfer Assessment Measures" published in late October. A public comment period for the draft measures closed on Nov. 28.
"The ability to transfer data securely across transnational digital networks is of central importance to the national policy objectives of many countries, including China," the groups write in the Dec. 1 letter. "Data transfers, which are critical at every stage of the value chain for companies of all sizes, support global supply chains and promote productivity, safety, and environmental responsibility."
Signatories of the letter include the US Chamber of Commerce, US-China Business Council, BSA | The Software Alliance, the Information Technology Industry Council, Business Europe, the European Services Forum, the Africa Information and Communication Technologies Alliance, the Asia Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association, the Associacao Brasileira das Empresas de Software, and the Australian Information Industry Association.
